First PTO from Paramount — four days, no laptop, three generations at a World Cup in Guadalajara. I came home rewired, and still not over a 0–1.

Hey. I took PTO.

That sentence has more gravity than it should. I've been heads-down at work since March, and until this week I had never once clicked Submit on a vacation request without a low-grade guilt stomachache. Not burnout guilt. Good-employee guilt. The kind that whispers you should be in a standup somewhere, nodding wisely at a Jira ticket.

Then: Korea vs. Mexico. June 18. Guadalajara. My dad, my brother Justin, and me — the trip I promised at the bottom of last month's letter. Three generations, one rental car, one group chat that started polite and ended in ALL CAPS.

Getting there was Justin's masterpiece. Months ago, convinced the fares to Guadalajara were about to go insane, he booked us out of Tijuana instead of LA — so the trip opened with a drive south, a 4×4 from In-N-Out on the way down, and a border crossing before we ever saw a gate. From Tijuana it's a short hop to Guadalajara, and the descent through cloud banks felt like the universe granting a brief amnesty. Dad printed the itinerary. I packed one jersey too many and forgot sunscreen, which is on-brand.

IIThe crew일행

The Mexicans wanted photos. Random people, what felt like every five seconds — in the cab line, on the walk to the stadium, anywhere a Korea jersey caught an eye. Strangers waving us over, pulling us in for pictures like we'd all agreed to meet here. Nobody warns you the rivalry is this friendly.

Dad wore a Mexico jersey with a Korea headband — hedging both directions. I had the red home kit, finger hearts at total strangers (that's me below). Justin took the pink away kit, Apple Watch quietly counting steps he'll never mention.

None of this started in Guadalajara. I've been Team Korea since I was the kid in oval glasses out front of my elementary school — same squint, much smaller jersey.

I have been to big games before. This was different. Estadio Akron — 48,000 people, green lights under the white roof, two giant flags stretched across the pitch for the anthems. Korea on one half, Mexico on the other, and us in the middle trying not to cry in a selfie.

The World Cup is insanely good live. I mean the volume — the collective inhale before kickoff, the way an entire stadium becomes one instrument. I lost my voice by halftime. Then the second half happened, and if you support Korea, it was frustrating: a cagey 0–0 through forty-five, the home crowd booing their own team off at the break, and then — minute fifty — a goalkeeper error, Luis Romo, 1–0 Mexico. Group A gone for us. Justin went quiet. Dad kept clapping anyway. I kept scoreboard-watching like it might reverse itself.

The trip was still a win. The football, for Korea fans in our section, was not. Both things can sit in the same sentence. That's what I came home with.

A조는 끝.

You cannot survive Guadalajara on vibes alone, though we tried. There was octopus — whole, charred, draped over plantain chips like it had won its own match. And there was a chef in a grey coat scooping tartare with the focus of a surgeon, caught on a two-second clip I have watched forty times.

The food was almost unfairly good. The company was better. Dad narrated every bite. Justin ranked everything. I mostly ate and listened — which, if you know how loud my head usually is, is the real vacation.

The eating didn't even pause for customs. my phone buzzed the second we were back in LA — Sean. an hour later it was me, Sean, and Val crammed into a booth at Kobawoo House in Koreatown — bossam, crisp napa wraps, a sizzling squid platter, the kind of lunch that quietly says welcome home. then we pushed a cart through California Market like we still had a stadium to feed. there's a specific, quiet kind of happy in coming home to the people who already wanted to see you.

And the eating didn't stop once we were back in LA either — Dad, fully naturalized at Erewhon, two smoothies deep and grinning like the trip never ended.

I'm writing this back in LA with a sunburn and an inbox that waited, mostly patiently. First real PTO in a long time: logged, survived, would recommend. Korea lost 0–1 and I am still not over the goalkeeper moment. But I came home with Dad and Justin in the same group chat, still sending stadium clips at 11pm, and that feels like the part that actually mattered.

Last month I ended with see you next month. Here I am. The World Cup is still going. So am I. Back at the lot Monday, probably. Still not over the marquee.

a TikTok I couldn't stop replaying: a cat, upright, fully committed to “I'm Yours.” (not mine. wish it were.)
