AI rewrote what "software engineer" means around last Tuesday and will do it again next — the work is sliding from writing the thing to deciding what the thing should be and whether the machine got it right. DORA's 2025 research says the quiet part out loud: AI is an amplifier, not a shortcut. Throughput up, instability up. The teams winning aren't the ones with the shiniest model — they're the ones with version control and small batches. Systems problem, not tools problem.

Then Anthropic dropped Claude Fable 5 — Mythos-class, million-token context, the kind of model that makes you rethink what "one sitting" means for a refactor. I had four days with it before access got weird. Also: an email calling me a "top Claude Code power user," which is either a compliment or an intervention. They're shipping me a physical thing via Brilliant — tracking number and all — and I have no idea what it is. My title says Engineering Manager; my browser history says otherwise.
