A note on the week before any of the personal stuff. This happened this weekend, and I was not there, and I watched it through a phone like everyone else. It still felt like the kind of thing that should be on the record.

본격적인 근황 들어가기 전에, 이번 주 얘기 하나. 주말에 이거 일어났어. 나는 거기 없었고, 다른 사람들처럼 폰으로 봤어. 그래도 어딘가에 적어둘 만한 일 같았어.

And, an hour later, he came back out for one more.

그리고 한 시간쯤 뒤에, 한 곡 더 하러 다시 나왔어.

Youbin's phone buzzed at the kitchen table on the third morning. He looked at it. He looked at me. He looked at it again, and put it face-down. Then he picked it up and read it twice more.

"I got it," he said.

H1B. Approved. He's staying in the country.

유빈이 폰이 셋째 날 아침 식탁에서 진동했어. 한 번 보고. 나 한 번 보고. 다시 한 번 보더니 엎어놓더라. 그리고는 다시 집어들고 두 번 더 읽었어.

"됐다," 유빈이가 말했다.

H1B. 승인. 미국에 계속 있을 수 있어.

Youbin has been my friend since the fourth grade. We met at a foreign school in Korea — the kind of friendship that has since survived every era of communication technology — Cyworld, KakaoTalk, four time zones, one short stretch of Snapchat-and-nothing-else. We have a small joint criminal record from middle school that I will not be elaborating on, except to say: yes, we earned it.

By day, he is a finance guy at Goldman Sachs. By every other waking hour, he is an avid wildlife photographer who lives out of my old Corolla. He bought the car off me two years ago and has put more elk-photographing miles on it than I ever managed; the Corolla, against every reasonable prediction, has become a one-man Subaru commercial.

The thing about Youbin is that he has a track record of arriving in places, by force of will, that no rational person would attempt. The canonical story is from college. I had recently transferred to USC and was working at NASA at the time, which is a sentence that warrants its own paragraph but isn't getting one. The relevant detail is that I happened to be out of town the night Youbin's flight landed at LAX; Justin was also unreachable; and Youbin — no answer, no ride, no apology forthcoming — shrugged, hoisted his suitcase, and walked. From LAX to USC. About fourteen miles, through some of the worst pedestrian infrastructure in Southern California. He arrived at sunrise. He has never once asked for an apology.

So when his phone buzzed last week — a different kind of arrival, by a different kind of force — it tracked.

유빈이는 내 4학년 때부터 친구야. 한국에서 외국인학교 다닐 때 만났어 — 그 뒤로 모든 통신 기술의 시대를 다 거쳐 살아남은 우정 — 싸이월드, 카톡, 네 개의 시차, 그리고 한동안 스냅챗만 쓰던 짧은 시기까지. 우리는 중학교 때 같이 받은 작은 공동 정학 기록이 있는데, 그 얘기는 자세히 안 할 거고, 한 마디만 하자면: 응, 받을 만 했어.

낮에는 골드만삭스 금융맨. 그 외 모든 시간에는 내 옛 코롤라에서 살면서 야생동물 사진 찍는 사람이야. 2년 전에 그 차를 나한테서 사갔는데, 내가 평생 못 채운 엘크 사진용 마일을 다 채워놨어. 그 코롤라는 모든 합리적인 예측을 거스르고 1인 스바루 광고가 됐다.

유빈이 얘기를 하려면 일단 이거부터. 이 사람은 멀쩡한 사람이라면 시도조차 하지 않을 방식으로 어딘가에 도착하는 데 일가견이 있다. 정통 일화는 대학 때 거. 그때 나는 USC로 막 편입했고 NASA에서 일하고 있었는데 — 이건 따로 한 문단을 써야 할 만한 문장이지만 안 쓸 거고. 핵심은: 유빈이 LAX에 도착한 날 밤에 내가 마침 도시 밖에 있었다는 거. Justin도 연락 두절. 그래서 유빈이는 — 응답 없고, 픽업 없고, 사과도 곧 안 올 거고 — 어깨 한 번 으쓱하고, 캐리어 들고, 걸었어. LAX에서 USC까지. 약 14마일. 남부 캘리포니아 최악의 보행자 도로를 통과해서. 해 뜰 때쯤 도착했대. 사과를 요구한 적이 한 번도 없어.

그래서 지난 주에 유빈이 폰이 진동했을 때 — 다른 종류의 도착, 다른 종류의 의지로 — 어울렸다.

Justin is also back. The last time he appeared in this letter he was demanding rent money from Korea via full military signature block — Captain Justin J. Lee, 173rd Airborne, U.S. Army. He has since added Vietnam to the itinerary and a small village's worth of grainy story posts to the public record. He came home sun-tanned and apartment-hungry. The recon scripts I wrote in February actually came in handy. I take credit when I can.

Justin도 돌아왔어. 지난 호에서 마지막으로 등장했을 때 한국에서 군 직함 풀세트로 월세 내놓으라고 했던 사람 — Justin J. Lee 대위, 173 공수여단, 미 육군. 그 사이에 베트남을 일정에 추가했고, 작은 마을 분량의 흐릿한 스토리 사진들도 같이 추가됐어. 햇볕에 그을린 채로, 집 보러 다닐 준비 단단히 하고 돌아왔어. 2월에 짠 스크립트 진짜 쓸모 있더라. 자랑할 수 있을 때 자랑한다.

Kobe is back from Germany too. We've been getting back into surfing — and I want to be careful with this sentence, because there is a version of "I started surfing again" that is unbearable and a version that is just true, and I'm trying to write the second one.

The water at La Jolla is sixty degrees in late April. The first paddle out is a small humiliation. The second is fine. By the third you remember that the ocean does not care about your Slack notifications, your Q2 hiring plan, or your complicated relationship with the 405, and it is a tremendous relief.

Kobe도 독일에서 돌아왔어. 같이 다시 서핑하고 있는데 — 이 문장 쓸 때 좀 조심해야 돼. "다시 서핑 시작했어"라는 말에는 듣기 괴로운 버전이 있고 그냥 사실인 버전이 있는데, 나는 두 번째 버전을 쓰려고 노력 중.

4월 말 라호야의 수온은 화씨 60도. 첫 패들 아웃은 작은 굴욕. 두 번째는 괜찮아. 세 번째쯤 되면 바다가 내 슬랙 알림이나 Q2 채용 계획이나 405 고속도로와의 복잡한 관계에 전혀 신경 쓰지 않는다는 걸 다시 깨달아. 엄청난 안도감이야.

Meanwhile, at work — Paramount has been the deep end, in a good way. I am, as of recently, the direct manager of six people, with two more hires landing this quarter. I've been reading more than I've been coding — books on running 1:1s, on giving useful feedback, on how to actually be helpful to people who now report to you. I ran my first one-on-ones last week. I had a script. I'd practiced. I felt every degree of "I don't know what I'm doing" until about ten minutes in, when I realized none of them did either, and the only requirement was to genuinely care about the answer.

The shift I'm trying to articulate: my job used to be unblocking myself. It is now unblocking other people. The skills, it turns out, do not transfer as cleanly as I'd assumed.

한편 회사에서는 — Paramount는 요즘 딥 엔드야, 좋은 의미로. 최근에 직속으로 6명을 매니징하기 시작했고, 이번 분기에 2명 더 합류 예정. 코딩보다 책을 더 많이 읽는 중 — 1:1 진행하는 법, 효과적으로 피드백 주는 법, 이제 나한테 보고하는 사람들을 실제로 어떻게 돕는지에 관한 책들. 지난 주에 첫 1:1을 했어. 스크립트 있었고. 연습도 했고. "내가 뭐 하는지 모르겠다"는 감각을 매 순간 느꼈어, 한 10분쯤 지나서 깨닫기 전까지 — 다들 똑같이 모르고 있었고, 진짜 필요한 건 그 답에 진심으로 신경 쓰는 것뿐이라는 걸.

요즘 정리해보려는 변화: 내 일은 예전엔 나를 unblock하는 거였어. 이제는 다른 사람들을 unblock하는 거야. 그 두 스킬, 생각만큼 깔끔하게 옮겨가지 않더라.
