The past few weeks have been an open house. Two cousins flew in from the east coast. A high school friend drove down from Salt Lake. Another cousin graduated from USC. Justin shipped out for National Guard training, which means Kobe — his dog, not the human — moved in for the duration and immediately tried to organize a coup.
Itemized accordingly.

Eunice & Lance, Westbound μ λμ€ & λμ€, μμͺ½μΌλ‘
The east coast contingent arrived first. Eunice and Lance are both cousins on μλ§'s side, which means a visit from them is technically a family event and emotionally a surprise audit of one's life choices. We are all old enough now that the audit goes both ways — a gentle, unspoken mutual agreement to notice but not comment on each other's new and interesting anxieties.
Eunice — freshly promoted from analyst to associate at the bank — cashed in two weeks of PTO the moment the ink was dry on her new title. She celebrated this foregone conclusion by flying three thousand miles away from the source of it, which is the only correct way to handle good news.
Lance is still marinating in the consequences of dropping out of Harvard two years ago to join a startup that promised to revolutionize — I think — the way people schedule meetings about scheduling meetings. He is, this week, deciding to go back in the Fall. The kind of decision that sounds final until you say it out loud to your cousin in a car, and the cost of gas in California being what it is, I believe that makes me his highest-paid therapist.
I had forgotten the specific way these two laugh when they're in the same room. It sounds like two very happy, slightly confused geese being told the same very good joke. It came back fast.

Brawley, Bows-Forward λΈλ‘€λ¦¬, 보μ°μ¦ μΆλ
Brawley drove down from Salt Lake for the surf. We've been friends since high school, a stretch of time so vast I no longer find it strange that he has his own personal idiolect, of which the primary feature is referring to Rainbow sandals, exclusively, as "Bows." He says it without irony. He says it without pause. It has not been funny for fifteen years, which has, through some strange temporal loop, made it hysterical.
"You bringing your Bows?"
"I'm wearing my Bows."
"Pack a spare pair of Bows in case."
We surfed with Lauren and Dakota — an activity that, depending on the day, is 90% floating, 8% paddling, and 2% a brief frantic conversation with God. The water was cold. The sets were forgiving. Nobody got hurt, nobody got greedy, and everyone got at least one shaka in before the wind came up and reminded us we are all, at our core, just fragile land-mammals with questionable hobbies.

The Other Kevin λ€λ₯Έ μΌλΉ
Also rotating through this week: Kevin — the other Kevin — with Ayeshna. He commutes weekly from San Francisco, half for work and half for Sarah, who is grinding through an MD-PhD at UCLA. That is a doctorate AND a medical degree, simultaneously, which is the kind of fact one's friends learn to mention only when explicitly asked, and even then with the same careful tone you use to describe a relative's hedge fund.
Kevin has memorized every Southwest gate at LAX, which I respect and also slightly fear. The fact that this newsletter now contains two Kevins is, statistically, my fault.

Matthew, Conferred 맀ν, νμ μμ¬
Friday afternoon at USC. Awarding Matthew a degree in psychology is, structurally, like giving a cat a driver's license — hilarious, slightly concerning, and you're not entirely sure he understands the responsibility he now holds. The diploma is physical proof of a thesis the entire family has been arguing about for four years: that he is, in fact, capable of listening.
The row, left to right: κ³ λͺ¨λΆ, κ³ λͺ¨, Christine, me. A phalanx of iPhones operating at slightly different angles — a study in familial parallax. κ³ λͺ¨ didn't take hers out once. She was just watching. A terrifying, beautiful focus.
When they called his name — given name, family name, the small precise pause between them — a sound somewhere between a stadium roar and a startled goat erupted from our section. Then the cap went up. Then the cap came down. Then somebody else's cap landed in our row and we cheered for that one too, because we were in a rhythm. Matthew is now professionally qualified to analyze why we all made that sound. He has, so far, declined to comment.
A diploma is a piece of paper. The walk across the stage is the whole sentence.

Kobe, Unsupervised μ½λΉ, 무방λΉ
Justin shipped out for National Guard training, which left Kobe — the dog, not the late Laker — in my custody for the duration. He took it personally. For three days he refused dinner, refused walks, and stationed himself by the front door with the thousand-yard stare of a man who has been deeply and personally wronged by the federal government.
By day four he had assimilated. By day five he was, by any reasonable definition, radicalized. By day six I caught him on the Ring camera — mid-heist, from across town — counter-surfing an entire family-size bag of Pirate's Booty I had foolishly left within mouth-range. The footage is a masterclass in unrepentant criminal enterprise. I have watched it seventeen times.
We also got him on a board at the beach, which was unauthorized by the actual owner but extremely authorized by Kobe, who seemed to view it as a clear violation of his parole and enjoyed it accordingly.

Two More Seats μ리 λ κ° λ
The team is now six and growing. Paramount Short Form is hiring two more engineers this quarter, which means the collective suffering-to-shipping ratio is about to improve dramatically. It has been the most rewarding work of my career — which is a polite way of saying it has sandblasted the last vestiges of my youth from my very bones, but in a fun, stock-vesting kind of way.
Roles are ~$200K USD depending on experience. If you know someone good — the kind of engineer who reads the docs, ships the thing, then comes back and asks, with unnerving sincerity, why — please forward this. Application: lnkd.in/gkq2uqsV.
I will personally read every referral that comes in through this letter. That is both a promise and a thinly-veiled cry for help.
