Memorial Day weekend · May 22–25, 2026 메모리얼데이 주말 · 2026년 5월 22–25일

FRIThe Lot

Memorial Day weekend started Friday afternoon, when an internal email I almost archived turned out to be a screening invite — The Passenger, on the Paramount lot, that night, plus-one included.

Justin lives in Frogtown. I live closer to the lot. For months now we've been running the same bit on each other — come thru, no, you come thru — neither of us willing to make the drive over for a coffee. The screening was one of the rare cases where the geography wasn't negotiable: the movie was at Paramount, so Justin had to come thru. He did. He also let me know, with feeling, that I had not solved the parking problem on his behalf, and that this was, in fact, on me.

Here's Justin: gray tee, light jeans, and the standing-still face of a person who has forgotten what to do with his hands. Behind him the rounded marquee with Paramount scripted across it, two stone planters of red flowers flanking the path, the last of the side-light catching the cream stucco. I've been at this lot long enough that I should be over the marquee. I'm not over it. Neither was he.

for the man who drove in from Frogtown, the marquee is the receipt

The screening itself was at one of the lot theaters — not the grand-old room I had pictured, just a clean modern auditorium with the title card glowing up front: PASSENGER · share your excitement. They handed out Paramount Pictures popcorn bags at the door, the kind with the mountain logo stamped on the side. Justin had Sour Patch Kids on his lap. Somebody in a red dress was still finding her seat as the lights went down. We sat through the credits like we were going to learn something. We did not learn anything. It was still nice.

Sunday started slow and indoors. Service at Citizens Church with Crystal, Josh, Minyoung, and Justin. Crystal and Josh had to slip out before we got to the courtyard, so the photo evidence is short two people — consider this their footnote.

The selfie that did happen: me in a denim shirt grinning at nothing in particular, Minyoung in white with a green tank under it, Justin in a textured cream polo looking, as he always does, two inches taller than the frame can hold.

By mid-afternoon I had decided I needed dirt. I went home, threw a bag and a single camp chair in the RAV4, and pointed it east. I'm a recent convert to dispersed camping — for anyone unfamiliar, it's camping without a campsite. You drive into a national forest until the asphalt becomes gravel and the gravel becomes a suggestion, then you find a flat patch far enough from anyone else to pretend you've left civilization. The trade is no bathroom, no neighbors, no Wi-Fi, no rules. Mostly worth it.

Big Bear is about an hour and a half from me. Pacific Crest country, lake at the bottom, fire roads going every direction up the ridge. I aired the RAV4 down — yes, the RAV4 — and pointed it uphill.

Found a flat-ish patch on a sandy ridge with the whole San Bernardino range hazing out into layers behind it. Backed the RAV4 in with the tailgate open and the one chair set up next to it — that was the whole operation. There's a very specific moment in dispersed camping when the engine finally clicks off and your ears reset — and you realize how loud the things you live with normally are.

The sun was still high when I got there, sun-dog smeared across a cirrus sky. Later, the kind of sunset that makes a non-photographer instinctively reach for their phone. Mine was on airplane mode. I reached for it anyway.

Monday I refused to put on real pants. The to-do list was: nothing. The actual list, naturally, was a few things.

I had a U-Haul U-Box to open at the storage yard. There were two locks on it. I had also, with great consistency, forgotten the keys at home. That gave me a choice: drive 35 minutes back, do it again the other way, lose an hour and ten to my own brain — or hit the Home Depot ten minutes up the road and buy a pair of bolt cutters. I bought the bolt cutters. It felt, briefly, like a clever move.

brand-new bolt cutters, brand-new humility

The lock did not move. I leaned. I jumped on the handles. I made the small focused noise of a man losing an argument with a piece of metal. Justin had come along for the ride, the way you bring a friend to a coin flip you suspect might go badly. He took the cutters out of my hands.

same cutters, same lock — I have decided this is a posture issue, not a strength issue

Then it was Kobe time. Kobe is the resident dog of the patio out back — black-and-tan, ears that snap upright when you say his name, a collar he tolerates. He has a strong preference for being touched in one very specific area: the soft spot right under the chin, between the front paws. Bury your hand in there and he goes catatonic. It is one of the few perfectly efficient happiness loops I have access to, and I lean on it.

the spot — he will not contest your method

The rest of Monday was margin. The actual word. Sitting at the work station for no reason. Reading a chapter, abandoning it, reading another. Watching the late light pass across the wide-plank floor of the living room for longer than I had any business watching it.

Living room: white sectional and ottoman, a black floating shelf of small potted plants above it, a tall bird-of-paradise in the corner, a rubber tree on the console, wide-plank floors
the living room — cleaned for the photo, I will not pretend otherwise
Work station: dual monitors, monitor light bar, mechanical keyboard, ceramic mug, Stanley Kubrick book, Paramount-logo mousepad, blackout shade pulled most of the way down
the work station — same disclaimer

Three days. One night in the dirt. One movie on a lot I still can't believe I work at. One trip from Justin's neighborhood to mine that I'm told I should have paid for in parking. Two padlocks, one set of brand-new bolt cutters, and a clean reminder that Justin handles them better than I do. A dog under whose chin I will continue to find solace.

Happy Memorial Day to those it's for. To the rest: take the long weekend wherever you can find it.

— Kevin
